Director's Statement
In the beginning, this film, Melani, was something like a sequel to one of my previous films, Terrori di Imaginacion. In both films I am most interested in the female world. I want to explore the fertile side of the world in a ritualistic way. But this time I wanted to put my characters in a no man’s land, in an absolutely natural environment. I didn’t care about their way of life. I didn’t mind to present my characters as natives or non-natives. But I would like them to be free from behaviors and patterns that are imposed by the urban lifestyle and civilization.

I didn’t care about their way of life. I didn’t mind to present my characters as natives or non-natives. But I would like them to be free from behaviors and patterns that are imposed by the urban lifestyle and civilization.
The focal point of the above was the location of the
shooting, a beach in Pilio called Melani after which the film was named.
It’s a most endearing place and I see it as somehow cathartic for me.
From the time I had spent there of all the visits I had had, I can
easily recall something entirely unadulterated which was being
paganistic at the same time. I was also perceiving time in that place in
a totally new and shocking way for me, as I had the sense of every
moment coming out of the involuntary interlocking of personal senses and
private thoughts to such broad scope though that was going beyond the
merely particular and individualistic. So, it was a challenge for me to
place in that setting a group of 10-15 people. And although it was a
film crew, I tried to curb and be freed from the process and
practicalities of shooting as much as possible and focus instead on the
impact of the scenery on them, on their feelings, and on their entire
aura and being, whether that was about the actors themselves or the
producer’s assistant or even the makeup artist. Those were the key
elements most precious to me for the making of this film and that was
what justified the creation of the film to my mind.
Besides the female
world, without actually referring to the idea of sex in the strict
sense, the film is about the male world and the (non)-interrelations
between them, their being present and situated amidst nature, looking
into the interconnections of the characters’ needs and basic instincts.
Basically, more than anything else, I was interested in filming the
passing by and being of them as human entities in that unspoilt scenery
without having the slightest intention of making a documentary.
At this
point, I would like to quote Leo Carax who in one of his interviews
said,“I don’t work with people who ask me questions.” And this is
because it totally expresses the way I wish to work. If you have to
explain what you’re doing, then this in a sense downplays the very
deeditself. It means that you have to subject it to a kind of logical
reasoning in order for it to be perceived. However, the things that are
for real exist without the need to be accounted for. They are because
they are. So simply. And in the filmmaking I’m interested in, what
appeals to me the most is to try to explore those things. In a way I
don’t think that we as filmmakers have to or are able to reproduce
reality. Yet, I believe that what we create has to be real. So, this is
how we went on such a quest as a group, with everyone involved in the
film. And I’d like to stress in particular Dimitra’s Aggelou leading
role as she, without intruding with acting, fittingly blended in with
the whole world of the film. This is what filled me with every
confidence in the “truth” of the images we were filming and in the
reality of the world they were projecting. Then as well I could claim
the same for my working with musician Valentina Mushy. Although she was
not physically present in the shooting, she seemed from early on to be
an integral part of the film and entirely mentally aligned with its
world. Those were thethings that in fact inspired me with hope and
courage to go on as well as made me feel justified in the element of
“truth” within and of the film.
Finally, although the characters in the
film seem to be moving beyond the realm of language,I chose to use an
extensive voice over with extracts from Marguerite Duras’ work, as well
as that of Joyce Mansour’s, and Nikos Irinakis’ poetry. I am not really
aware whether this was a conscious decision or a more impulsive process.
But Duras’ intuitively emotional register, the self-destructively
instinctual words by Mansour and Nikos’ claim of an intrinsically
self-contained entity were elements that sprang from the world of the
film itself. They were as if they had already been there; an
indisputable presence to me, a presence comparable to thatof the natural
scenery within the film.
μια συνέντευξή του «I don't work with people who ask me questions.».
