Director's Statement
I think the creation of a
movie as the birth of an Utopia. An Utopia which creates the ground for each
one to improve his intimate and absolute way of expressing and existing.
Inside the common dynamic of a movie project is for me the occasion of …….
From this combination arises harmony. Consequently, every movies I make is
above my own primitive initiative, since I am only a part of the movie and
that I so cannot as such as I don't want to determine or prescribe the final
result of the film.
" Don't wake, Eurydice" began with
the will of exploding the so well known Greek mythology of Orpheus and
Eurydice.
In the story
is said that after Eurydice dies,
Orpheus finds a way to go down to the Underworld and take back his
beloved Eurydice. He founds her, and she follows him until the moment that
Orpheus turns his head to look at her. It is said that with this action,
Orpheus disregarded one oath of the Gods, and so Eurydice disappeared
forever.
Our thoughts
started from this precise point. But we were not interesting in processing a
remake of the myth. I wanted to consider
this story in a different way. I didn’t like to let Eurydice in the mercy of
the Gods. I wanted to think her as a creature with her own will. And
according to this point of view, I
wanted to explore her stay in the Underworld as an issue of her own choice.
The only thing we
know about Death is that it is something unknown, making it somehow as the
only valid clue of metaphysical. It might explain the deep attraction
Humanity has for it as we can observe it again and again in our all History.
In " Don't
wake, Eurydice", we were absolutely not interested in making a
scenography of a gloomy and macabre landscape of death. . We so wanted to
explore some kind of alive death. Everything having a Life,
inevitably, has shaped a memory of life. And this memory, this inorganic
context of life, is able to create, even
in death, another form of life.
The issue was for
us to write a choreography and a cinematography of the everyday
"life" of a dead creature.
